Downsizing

Today I had Ally downsize her overabundance of toys. I thought it was the perfect time to do so since her birthday is Friday and she would be getting new toys. So I explained to her what we were going to do and why. I had 4 categories in which she had to put her toys (from left to right in the picture): 1) smaller toys that she could donate to her preschool's treasure chest, 2) toys she didn't play with anymore that could be donated to Goodwill, 3) trash for toys that couldn't be helped, and 4) toys to keep.
I thought she was going to want to keep everything but that wasn't the case. She did a great job of sorting her toys--as you can tell the basket for Goodwill is overflowing!

I imagine Brent is jumping with glee! :) Seriously, your house probably needs to lose a few of those extra "toy pounds." :)

hey becky,
carter just turned 4 a few weeks ago and we did something similar. we also had her donate 4 toys from the ones she received on her birthday for toys for tots or something similar at christmas. it just seems like they get so much and it gets opened to be played with for 2 seconds and then forgotten. so, we had her pick one gift for each year of her life to donate to children at christmas who don't have any toys. i am not sure that she understands completely that some children don't have such things, but if we start early, maybe she will have a greater appreciation later. i have really enjoyed keeping up with you and the girls via your blog. and, i will see you next week at the hope market square. i know you will do great!

That's great! I totally plan on doing that for Avery's next birthday. I think it's a great way to teach kiddos about responsibility, giving, and living simply.

Nice work, Momma!
